5 Top Tips to Create a Travel Capsule Wardrobe.

Packing light can seem daunting, but as an international traveler (or even a domestic traveler), learning to pack frugally is a skill you may want to master.

Once you know the rules of easy and hassle-free packing, your packing experience becomes simpler and stress-free.

Here are my top 5 tips to take your packing to the next level!

  1. Pack your basic “must haves.”

  2. Focus on fabrics.

  3. Pack your lightest shoes.

  4. Add a layer.

  5. Coordinating colors.

So let's delve a little deeper!

1. Pack your basics “must haves”: This is the place to start, always begin with wardrobe “must-haves.” These are your basic T-shirts, shorts, casual tops, pants, and one smart outfit if you need to attend any event. A little black dress (LBD) always works well as you can dress it up or down with a scarf.

2. Focus on fabrics: Here we're thinking about functionality and fashion. Fabrics play a massive difference in weight when you pick outfits for traveling. Stay cool and have fabrics that feel fresh for a longer time, cotton and linen are perfect. Neutral colors like white, beige or black are great choices as they can be coordinated with every outfit you wear. I personally buck the trend here and often go for red!

3. Pack the lightest shoes: Wear your heaviest shoes and pack your lightest.  Consider also multipurpose shoes that can be worn with a variety of outfits you wear on the trip. As much as you might love heels, unless you're going to a function, leave them at home!

4. Add a layer: Extra layers are always necessary, based on what kind you prefer, a  light jacket, denim jacket, or rainwear. This obviously depends on the weather of the destination you need to visit.

5. Coordinating colors: I like to select a color palette with 2 or 3 coordinating colors and then add a splash of color. Often I choose a bright color as a theme for the destination - yes, I know I'm crazy!

6. Accessories: Pashminas, scarves, and sarongs are your best friends. They help in making your outfit unique, keep you warm and cover you up when necessary!

Word of warning: Once you are done, don't be tempted - like I am - to add random pieces that do not match with anything! And think about how much room you want to save to bring souvenirs home!

Here’s an idea for you. If you’d like more ideas, google “travel time capsule.” You can even add “for spring”, “for the beach” or “for winter.” You get the idea!
